As most Wednesdays are, this day was quite mundane for Dennis. He spent most of his day working at his desk in solitude. His friend Kathrine worked down the hall and on occasions, he would stop to talk to her in passing. He was starting to get fidgety and felt the urge to take a brisk walk to get him a bit more energized. He figured a quick stop by the break room for a vending machine treat was exactly what he needed to get his day going again.
As he passed Kathrine’s office, she waived him over. They were talking about the new project her team was working on when she asked if he could grab a box from the front desk for her. He was delighted to have another excuse to not sit around, so he agreed without hesitation. It was an architecture firm, how big could this box be? Besides, this also meant he could take a little more time to relax after such a stressful morning. If that was even possible!
As he made his way to the front desk, he couldn’t help but think about all the tasks he still had left before the end of the day. In fact, the faster he got it done, the earlier he could go home and actually get a chance to unwind. After a brief small talk with the desk attendant, he lifted the box off of the ground and quickly turned, still consumed by his thoughts. That was until he felt a sharp pain shoot up his spine! He immediately placed the box on the ground and attempted to assess his condition.
The box weighed significantly more than you’d imagine based on its visual dimensions. Dennis found this out the hard way! To be honest, most of us would have probably done the same. By being so consumed in his thoughts, Dennis didn’t consider his posture before attempting to lift the box. This put his back in a compromised position, which Dennis didn’t realize until it was too late! In fact, Dennis’ accident is the textbook definition of work-related injuries due to improper technique while lifting heavy objects.
Even though Dennis had the physical strength to left the box, he didn’t use the proper technique and ultimately injured his back because of it. The worse your technique is, the less weight it takes to cause injury. This is exactly why proper technique is vital every single time. This also applies to parents! You’d be surprised how many parents tweak their backs while picking up or caring for their child. It is important to be sure that, no matter what, you keep you back straight and engaged. Arching or bending your backing while lifting a heavy object is a common cause of injury. You also want to remember to lift from your legs!
There are many work-related injuries that occur that, regardless of effort, could not have been prevented. However, improper lifting techniques are incredibly avoidable! As your family’s chiropractic care providers, we believe it is important for us to educate our patients on ways they can prevent injuries before they happen. We also believe it’s important to provide them with information on what to do in case one of these instances does occur.
